LEXIN - Dictionaries for minority language immigrants

— arkivert under: ,

NORDLEXIN is a Nordic collaborative project that develops illustrated dictionaries for language minority immigrants. The starting point is the Swedish LEXIN, a government-funded project that was initiated in the 1980's and that has developed dictionaries from Swedish into more than 20 target languages.

In the 1990's all the Nordic countries were offered free use of the Swedish material, and in the autumn of 1996, the Norwegian project team started the work of developing similiar Norwegian dictionaries commissioned by the Norwegian government. In addition to the lexicographical and programming work carried out, the project team has developed a flexible user interface with interactive links between words and pictures. This makes it possible to use LEXIN as a learning tool as well as a dictionary. It is possible to search among the 2,700 picture words in both directions and across all available languages. All the netbased products are freely available on The Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training's site 'Skolenettet': http://skolenettet.lexin.no

The first Norwegian LEXIN products were launched in 2002 and comprised a Norwegian monolingual illustrated dictionary, a Norwegian–English illustrated dictionary, and 33 separate picture pages with approximately 2,700 picture words in Tamil, English, Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål. New netbased and printed LEXIN dictionaries are developed continuously. See the LEXIN project site for updated information.
